Sobremesa
Setting the table for conversation, connection, and community.
In a world where connection often takes a back seat to busy schedules, our latest project brings the beauty of meaningful conversation and human connection back into focus. Inspired by the Spanish tradition of sobremesa—the after-meal tradition of lingering around a table in good conversation with close friends—we’ve created an environment that (we hope!) encourages genuine connections, open conversations, and collaborative creativity.
Sobremesa is a cherished practice in Spain and Latin America, where friends and family linger around the table, often squeezing the last few drops out of the wine bottle, and savoring easy, free-flowing conversation. For us, this concept is central to much of our work: designing hospitality spaces that unite friends, families, and communities. The idea of sobremesa draws from the Mexican roots of our studio, connecting us more deeply to a heritage rich in family values and interpersonal relationships.
We’re excited to bring this concept to BDNY 2024, with the intention of uniting the top minds of our industry and reminding ourselves, as well as our colleagues, of the importance in simply connecting. More than just a gathering space, Sobremesa was crafted to feel communal—a place that nurtures our sense of belonging, and embraces the idea that connection often begins with a conversation.
At the heart of Sobremesa is a simple but powerful question: How might we create a space that brings people together and engages them to stay, as themselves? We believe the answer lies in the details. Every element of the space has been curated to support and sustain meaningful connections, from the soft lighting to the inviting warmth of Yucatecan textures and colors—all derived from our own studio in Mérida, Mexico. This intentional design moves away from transactional spaces toward a more inviting environment. Each table and seat is a nod to community, encouraging guests to linger, share ideas, and open up in new and vulnerable ways.
Throughout the process of designing our Sobremesa space, we were reminded that the most impactful design doesn’t simply look good—it brings people together. We look forward to the conversations, the connections, and the creative sparks that Sobremesa will ignite. We look forward to welcoming you around our table.
